Facing the camera

Reversal places a non-reversing mirror inside the familiar outline of a camera. Stand before it and raise a hand. The face and gesture are recognisable, but their orientation differs from the image returned by an ordinary mirror. A small bodily action makes that difference available to notice. The work begins with a familiar encounter with oneself, then changes the terms on which that encounter takes place.

Why the camera shape matters

The camera-shaped body gives this reflection a particular setting. A person facing a camera occupies the position of its subject. Here, that person is also the one looking into the object. The sculpture brings these two positions together, making the viewer both observer and the figure held within the frame. The outline does more than identify a device: it establishes a relationship between the object and the person standing before it.

A familiar face, another position

Matsuura uses this change of orientation to ask how a familiar self-image is formed. The work moves between the face someone recognises and their awareness of being visible to others. Looking becomes a way of reconsidering the position from which one is seen.
