A surface made to disappear
Background places a single camera lens in a chroma-key green surface. This colour is ordinarily used so that a background can be removed or replaced within an image. Here, the surface remains before the viewer, while the lens gives it the appearance of looking back. The element intended to support an image from behind assumes a more active presence in the room.
Before an image exists
No image is taken or stored. The encounter concerns the relation suggested by the lens before any recording takes place. Someone approaches to look at the work and stands in the position of a potential photographic subject. Matsuura uses this shift to reconsider foreground and background, observer and observed. The green surface and the lens each carry a familiar role from image-making; placing them together changes how those roles are read.
