The camera becomes a sign
What Icon? enlarges the familiar DSLR-shaped symbol used to stand for photography on a screen. A mirror occupies its centre. The outline remains recognisable as a camera, while the mirror includes the viewer and the surrounding space within the object. The work moves a compact graphic sign into a physical situation that someone can stand before.
Photographing the act of photographing
When someone photographs the mirrored sculpture with a phone, the image can contain the camera icon, the person taking the picture and the device in their hand. The act of documenting the object becomes part of what is documented. Matsuura asks why the outline of a DSLR continues to represent photography across devices whose physical forms differ from it. The sculpture brings that inherited symbol into contact with the present act of making a photograph.
