Several images together
Parallax presents a landscape as several images side by side when viewed through its two openings. The view does not resolve into one stable image. The binocular form offers a familiar invitation to look, while the coexistence of images changes what the viewer finds beyond the eyepieces.
A viewpoint is made
Matsuura uses this unresolved view to question the idea of vision as a single, transparent window onto the world. Looking has a position, a distance and a body behind it. Within the group of optical apparatuses, Parallax brings plurality into one act of seeing. The work asks the viewer to attend to how a view is formed, as well as to the landscape that appears within it.
