A direction given form
Focus houses a vintage super-telephoto lens inside a large conical body. A device made for seeing at a distance becomes a sculptural object with a pronounced direction. To look through it, the viewer must bring the body into relation with the apparatus and the distant point towards which it is directed. Posture and position become part of looking.
Staying with a view
Matsuura relates this work to attention: what it means to remain with one view amid the many images and interruptions of daily life. The lens gives that concern a physical structure. Its scale and direction put the relation between near body and distant subject into the gallery, allowing sustained looking to be considered as an action involving the whole apparatus.
